Mid Century Modern Make Over

PicMonkey Collage

I am all about mid-century modern recently. The furniture is so classic yet whimsical at the same time in its interesting shapes. I found this gorgeous little table/desk for only ten bucks! Amidst all the junk at the thrift store I was drawn to its interesting leg shape and wood pattern on the front cabinet. By buying some new hardware and sprucing up the wood it looks so glamorous and expensive. I love it! I always am telling friends that you have to train your eye at thrift stores and antique shops to be able to single out pieces and see the vision of them outside of their cluttered surroundings! I started by rubbing this bees wax on the wood – always following the grain of the wood.

After removing the old pull knob, there were holes that did not match my new knob! I bought this wood filler to cover the holes.

I then drilled a hole for my new knob.

I love how glamorous this knob is! Knobs are a quick, effective, and cheap way to spruce up old furniture!

I added some fun accessories to spruce it up.

A classical Thanksgiving table scape

Image

When it comes to style, I would not classify myself as totally traditional. I like to keep things classy and timeless, but spice things up at the same time. I try and translate these ideas into my decorating style and philosophy. My last Thanksgiving table scape was less conventional because I steered away from the standard warm fall colors like orange and red. However, sometimes, upholding tradition is beautiful. The classic tradition can remind us of our childhood and other warm feelings of familiarity and comfort. From the colors to the plates this table is very traditional and completely emulates the warmth and happiness of the fall season. It did not cost much to assemble because much of the arrangement was found in my backyard and I made the place settings from brown grocery bags! Read more for a tutorial on this flower arrangement. I hope you are as inspired as I am! I am selling these center pieces, if you live anywhere from Camarillo, Ca to Goleta and are interested email me for a quote at mercedezblush@gmail.com!

A Thanksgiving Table Scape

Image

I love love LOVE setting tables. It is one of my favorite hobbies! I love the challenge of creating something aesthetically pleasing and functional (well, sometimes functional). I created this table scape which I absolutely love and I only wish the photos could capture the magic that is my dining room right now! The stacking, layering, and combination of rustic and glam is so much fun; it is simple, yet complex. Instead of classic name tags, I made mini pumpkin pies with my guests’ initials on top. I plan on testing out a few other table scape ideas, including traditional and modern! How will you decorate your Thanksgiving table? Read more for details on this look!

5 simple ways to make your house cozier for fall.

Image

I embrace holidays completely. I LOVE to decorate, it just makes life that much more exciting when you feel like you are celebrating. However, after Halloween feels like a waiting period, because Im just dying to get to Christmas! I do love Thanksgiving and this cozy time of year. I like to make the house feel cozier and festive for this chilly season in small ways that do not really require holiday specific decorations.

Image

I think that every single home needs to have flowers at all times. I view flowers as the life in a room. Have you ever seen a living space with no life? When you think about this concept, it totally makes sense. A big room filled with furniture and no life just looks like it’s missing something. A simple bouquet is all you need to give your space more depth and personality. I love the idea of holiday-appropriate flowers without being completely cheesy. Here are some fall appropriate arrangements that will bring the perfect amount of drama that fall requires.

ImageImage

I love the drama that fall brings in all ways, like burgundy lips and dark colors and contrasts. I love love love dahlias for fall floral arrangements; they come in a gorgeous dark burgundy hue that just makes me quiver with excitement! Sloppy wide arrangements with dark dahlias add drama and endearment. I am currently loving adding vegetables because it adds a sort of heartiness that I think matches what fall represents. How gorgeous are these deep purple artichokes!?

How beautiful and dramatic are these!?

Fall is about feeling cozy. I am the biggest believer that lighting is everything. To be honest, lighting completely changes my moods in a way you could not understand. If I am in a overly, brightly lit room I feel uncomfortable and I just cannot relax. However, when a room is properly lit I feel relaxed and comfortable. Candles add extra sparkle and ambiance to a room that makes a chilly night feel special.

Textured throws and cozy blankets make your space more welcoming. On cold fall lights, cozy blankets are the perfect touch to make things feel more intimate.

This one may seem silly but fall is all about intimacy. And like I said before, living spaces need life. Having some sort of greenery in your home makes for a cozier setting and filling that empty corner with life makes such a change you would not believe.

Image

This comes with a rule though: you need to find an indoor plant that matches the flow and style of your home. I am obsessed with the indoor olive trees, they are just gorgeous.

Finally, always keep a fresh baked treat around during the holidays. Their is nothing better than the smell of fresh baked goods out of the oven. Not only is this hospitable for guests, it makes things feel more special and festive!

What do you do in your home to make things feel cozier around the colder holidays?

Mother’s day flower arrangement

Image

Mothers day flowers are so expensive and lets face it usually super cheesy. Hot pink roses over flowing with fern like greenery and babies breath are so….1980’s and I am just not willing to spend 20+ bucks for something like that. What people do not realize is throwing together an arrangement is so easy, and cheap PLUS its far more heartfelt.

I made 3 arrangements with flowers all bought from Trader Joes, these little lovelies cost me a total of 20 dollars and that made me three arrangements! So spare yourselves this year, run over to Trader Joes buy a couple flowers that spark your fancy and there you have it! Enjoy xoxo
